Richard (Dick) was found shot to death at Crestview school on September 19, 1999. According to his family, he was going there to meet someone about some rental property. There are no leads or suspects in his case.
In August 2000, Altomare's son, Richard Jr. of Salem, called on our former Prosecutor to remove himself from the case, accusing him of failing to pursue key evidence in the crime. He also filed suit asking Herron to turn over any evidence in his father's case, but Herron stated it was an active case and did not qualify as public record. I am not sure about any new evidence or if the current prosecutor is looking at any key evidence. You can read more about this here.
