His wife was working at the store when threw an intercom system he had installed, he heard her being robbed around 5:45 pm. He ran over to help his wife and there were 2 men in masks with a 16 gauge shotgun. When he tried to protect her, they shot him in the chest killing him. His wife then picked up a ball bat and chased them away to their car where there were 3 more men waiting in the car.
The vehicle was a 68/69 blue Chevy sedan.
There has also been speculation that this was a set up and family members of Irvin's said that the couple were fighting at the time of his death.
